An Apartment Style Guide For a Bachelor

For guys, there aren’t too many phrases in the English language that have the cool factor of a ‘bachelor pad’. Just muttering the phrase brings forth images of comfort, entertainment and style.

The creation of a bachelor pad most often occurs by chance as men are historically less likely to search for interior design ideas when moving into their new digs. Instead, bachelor pads naturally develop out of a duality of functionality and happenstance and can take years to complete. Take George Clooney for example, chances are he probably has one of the coolest bachelor pads around, but he has been working on it for years now.

It is the 21st century though, its now acceptable for men to research a little apartment decorating advice when they look to furnish their Los Angeles apartments. For those new-out-of-college bachelors and those newly single veterans who need help developing their new pads, here are some bachelor pad must-haves:

A large couch, preferably leather. The color and style of the couch can vary but it must be big. It must be comfortable. And it must be resistant to stains and rips.

A stock of blankets and pillows. Keep them tucked away if you want but one of these nights a date may want to snuggle up on the couch in front of your big flat panel. Comfortable pillows and blankets score extra points.

Pick out art work that complements your style and your space. This could be anything from an interesting movie/concert poster to an actual piece of art work you purchased or received. Always frame it – this is what separates you from your college counterparts.

A flat panel television. Prices on these technological behemoths have been on the decline and they can now be picked up for under a grand. Mount this across from the aforementioned couch to anchor your new space.

3 Style Warnings

As the movie Spiderman reminded all men: with great power comes great responsibility. To keep your place from turning from bachelor awesome to bachelor gross, remember the following 3 style warnings.

  • Don’t mix and match too many different color palettes or design styles. Choose your colors, choose your favorite design style and by and large, stick to them.
  • Dirty is not a style and no one will appreciate it. Clean up after yourself.
  • Your style should be appropriate for an adult. Cartoons and action figures do not constitute an appropriate style.

The key is to eliminate anything you dont really need from your closet and then set the remaining items up in a way that works well for you.
